What are body types?

In this article, we will explore together what body types are and why it’s important to consider your body type before starting a training or dietary plan.

What are body types?

Body type is the classification of an individual based on their physical characteristics. This classification is based on three main types of body types: ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph.

Understanding the difference between genotype and phenotype

Genotype and phenotype are terms used to describe an individual’s characteristics.

Genotype is the combination of genetic traits inherited from parents, while phenotype is the outward appearance of an individual. It includes body types and somatotypes, while phenotype includes characteristics like hair color, eye color, and height.

Somatotypes are the body type classification divided into three categories: ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph.

In summary, body types are the classification of an individual based on their physical characteristics.

Why is it important to know your body type?

Knowing your body type is essential for achieving the desired results in your exercise and diet routine. Each body type has its own characteristics that should be taken into account.

Additionally, knowing your body type is important for choosing the best exercises for your body.

For example, an ectomorph should opt for strength exercises to gain muscle mass, while an endomorph should choose aerobic exercises to burn fat.

Therefore, it is essential that you know your body type so you can create a suitable training and nutrition plan for your body. This way, you will have a better chance of achieving the desired results.

What are the body types?

There are three main body types: endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph. Let’s now understand the key characteristics of each:

Ectomorphs

  • Definition: Naturally thin individuals, fast metabolism, quick food digestion, difficulty in gaining muscle mass.
  • Traits: Fast metabolism, long and slender bones, narrow waist, narrow shoulders, less bulky calves.

Mesomorphs

  • Definition: Symmetric bodies, efficient metabolism, ease in gaining muscle and burning fat, symmetric bone and muscle structure.
  • Traits: Naturally muscular and lean, broad shoulders, well-developed chest, narrow waist, defined and developed calves.

Endomorphs

  • Definition: Ease in gaining muscle mass, ease in accumulating fat, slower metabolism, difficulty in shedding extra pounds.
  • Traits: Tendency to have a stronger and bulkier body with less definition, tendency to store fat, wide bones, broad joints, and a lot of strength.

How to determine your body type?

Discovering your body type is an important task because it helps you better understand your body and how it responds to training. But how can you determine your body type? First and foremost, you need to assess your own body.

Furthermore, our bodies are complex: You may have some characteristics of other body types or be a combination of two of them.

For example, some people may have ectomorph characteristics (such as slim legs and arms) and mesomorph characteristics (such as a larger chest and shoulders).

In addition to the common body types, there are also combined body types, which are more common than you might think:

  1. Ectomesomorph (ectomorph + mesomorph)
  2. Endomesomorph (endomorph + mesomorph).

It’s also important to remember that once you identify your body type, you can follow specific training and nutrition guidelines for each body type. This will help you achieve better results.

Therefore, to determine your body type, it’s important to assess your body. From there, you can identify your body type and, based on that, adopt the right training and nutrition plans to achieve the best results.
