Men are training their glutes more, and the trend is expected to increase by 2024

As men become increasingly conscious of their health and appearance, fitness and fashion experts predict that glute enhancement will be the hottest trend in 2024.

While the goal of building a bigger booty was previously associated mainly with women, men have shown a growing interest in improving this area.

Not surprisingly, this interest is already driving an increase in demand for natural or surgical strategies for glute development, and according to forecasts, this trend is expected to intensify in 2024.

Men will prioritize glute workouts in 2024

According to certified strength and conditioning specialist Gareth Sapstead, we are witnessing a shift: while women have traditionally focused more on glute training than men, this is changing.

Men are seeking to develop the strength and size of their glutes, and this will be a growing trend in the fitness universe in 2024. “I’m seeing more men looking to increase their glutes,” says Sapstead.

Eric Cobb, Fitness Manager at Equinox on E 63rd Street, noted that there has been a significant increase in the number of men focusing on glute exercises in gyms lately.

“Men used to focus on chest, biceps, and abs, but now glute exercises are much more sought after by them,” explained Cobb.

Equinox even created its own training class called “Best Butt Ever,” which Cobb said has become increasingly popular among men, especially in the last 16 months.

Strength and conditioning expert Gareth Sapstead confirmed to Men’s Health that “more and more people are looking to increase the strength and size of their glutes.”

Pilates and yoga, which historically focus on glute work, have also become increasingly popular among men and will be part of this new year’s trend.

The importance of glute muscles for overall body strength

The glute muscle group that makes up the buttocks area consists of the gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus. The gluteus maximus is the largest and most powerful muscle in the human body, playing a crucial role in any form of movement.

Martin Obonyo, manager of BornFit Gym in Nairobi, commented that effective glute work helps with male posture and optimizes athletic performance, improving strength, speed, jump height, acceleration, dynamics, and agility.

On the flip side, weak glutes can lead to injuries, pain, and discomfort throughout the body. This understanding of the benefits of a toned and well-worked butt is becoming increasingly common among men, according to Cobb Sapstead.

They are also realizing that strong and voluminous glutes can provide balance and an attractive appearance to the body.

Workout suggestions for toning the glutes: Must-Do Glute Moves

Men are becoming increasingly aware that strengthening the glutes can help improve their performance in 5k runs and basketball games. In addition to health benefits, glute strength also brings aesthetic advantages.

According to Sapstead, “Wanting to look great is great motivation! You can hide lack of abs, but you can’t hide if you have a ‘pancake’ butt!”

To strengthen all three glute muscles (maximus, medius, and minimus), it is necessary to practice the correct movements and focus on their range of motion. Additionally, for those experiencing back pain, strengthening the glutes can be an effective solution.

Here are some essential movements for an effective glute workout:

1. Barbell Hip Thrust

  • How to do it: Sit on the floor, a loaded barbell over your hips, shoulder blades against a bench, feet near your butt. Bridge upward, squeezing your glutes. Lower until the barbell nearly touches the floor. That’s 1 rep.
  • Reps and Sets: Do 10 reps, pausing at the top of the final rep. Do 3 sets.

2. One-and-One-Quarter Heavy Dumbbell Walking Lunge

  • How to do it: Do 10 walking lunge reps per side. On each rep, with your back knee an inch from the floor, pulse up a few inches. Then take your next step. The pulse-up attacks your glutes in a stretched position.
  • Sets: Do 3 sets.

3. Dumbbel High Stepup

  • How to do it: High stepups stretch your glutes. Stand holding dumbbells at your sides, right foot on a box 18 to 24 inches high. Lean forward just slightly, then stand up on the box, driving your left knee high. Lower slowly.
  • Reps and Sets: Do 8 to 10 reps. Do 3 sets per side.

Wardrobe updates to highlight glute gains

It’s not just workouts that are changing: men are updating their wardrobes to showcase gains in the glutes. “Now, guys expect their work pants to have the same fit and mobility as their gym clothes.”

Last year, Rhone, a leading brand in men’s fitness clothing, saw sales of its slim Commuter pants rise by 55%, while the skinny version increased by 33%.

Ben Checketts, co-founder and creative director of Rhone, said, “We designed our Commuter pants with design references from our athletic shorts to enhance and not affect the silhouette of the glutes. We use four-way stretch materials that don’t form wrinkles.”

Not only are workouts changing, but men are also modernizing their wardrobes to highlight their developments in the glutes.
